Portrait Walls

A dramatic way to display a collection of portraits is to group them together on one large wall.  It is a great way to show off a number of photographs and personalize a space in an intentional way.  The key to this look is to simplify certain elements so as to not overwhelm or make your gallery appear to busy.  Below are some hints to make yours look stunning:picture-346.jpg

  • Decide if you want your photographs to be in color or black and white, try to stick to one or the other.
  • If you are using color photographs, use the same frame and matting on all of them so that the focus is only on the photographs.  Avoid older color photographs, as they often have an ‘off’ color that makes them appear dated.
  • If you are using all black and white, try mixing in photos from various ages, as they have a timeless appeal.
  • If you have an eclectic set of frames, or prefer a variety of styles and textures, use black and white portraits, so as not to overwhelm the space.
  • Before hanging your portraits, lay them all out on the floor and arrange them into the space you have available on the wall.  Work with different arrangements, like a puzzle, before putting holes in your wall!
  • Remember these are only suggestions, the right attitude can pull off any look - so do what you love.
